Audience

1) Who is the target audience for Doctor Who? Has it changed since 1963?
The traditional target demographic for Doctor Who was males between the ages of 10 and 40 who enjoy science fiction television. However, since women began to watch more sci-fi in 1963, this has significantly changed, with a 22% increase in female audience from 1970 to 2010.

2) What audience pleasures are offered by Doctor Who - An Unearthly Child? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.
 
Personal Identity:  
The audience may personally identify with characters such as Susan, the doctor, and the teachers Ian and Barbara. Some viewers may identify with or relate to these individuals on some level because they share characteristics or attributes with them.

Personal Relationships: 
Some audience members might relate to these people in terms of their own personal relations. An example of this would be teachers like Ian and Barbra attempting to assist Susan while also caring for and ensuring her safety.

Diversion (Escapism): 
TV shows can also provide audience members with a sensation of escapism. The two teachers discovering the time machine are examples of this.

They would see how characters are portrayed during that time and society's views back then.

5) What kind of online fan culture does Doctor Who have? Give examples.

1) What was the television industry like in 1963? How many channels were there?
There were very little channels. Black and white with very poor graphics and editing. There was barely any cuts to the scenes.

2) How does An Unearthly Child reflect the level of technology in the TV industry in 1963?
It shows that technology during the times An Unearthly Child was very poor and underdeveloped.

3) Why is Doctor Who such an important franchise for the BBC? 
Doctor Who is BBC's most successful shows to ever be made. They earn a lot of money through this show internationally.

4) What other programmes/spin-offs are part of the wider Doctor Who franchise?

5) Why does the Doctor Who franchise have so much merchandise available? Give examples. 
There are many Doctor Who fans/ Science fiction fans who are willing to buy their merchandise. They make a lot of profit through this.
