I think His Dark Materials is a family show specifically targeted at children ages from 14-17. I think this as the two main characters in the show are also teenagers.

There was a lot of negative feedback with people stating it lacks the novelty and excitement of season 1 of the show.

A lot of fans criticized it as they have said the show is targetted towards people who have red and are already familiar with Phillip Pullman's bestselling books and people who remember every detail included ins season 1 of the show. People have also said it lacks the narrative and excitement of season 1 of the show.

Comparison: Doctor Who - An Unearthly Child and His Dark Materials - The City of Magpies

1) How are the technical conventions different between 1963 Doctor Who and 2020 His Dark Materials (e.g. camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene)?

Many of the scenes in the 1963 season of "Doctor Who" are choppy with hardly any edits. There is no detail in them and the camera quality is quite low. Furthermore, the image is rather static.'His dark material' from 2020, on the other hand, has amazing, clear camera quality that allows viewers to clearly see details. The episode is also very scene-heavy, which adds to its enjoyment.


2) What similarities and differences are there between Doctor Who and His Dark Materials in terms of genre and narrative?

Both "Doctor Who" and "His Dark Materials" convey to the fantasy genre as they feature supernatural characters like witches and "daemons." Additionally, they portray a sci-fi theme with futuristic devices and technological advancements.


3) How are representations of people, places and groups similar or different in the two shows?

The two people working together to fight the adversaries and find a solution to the issue is a common theme in both series, although in "Doctor Who," the majority of the cast members are white. However, we may observe a much more diversified group of actors from all racial backgrounds in "His Dark Materials."

Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child Language and Representation blog tasks

1) Write a summary of the notes from our in-class analysis of the episode..   Camerawork and sound: Due to the 1960s technology, the camera work in this episode is quite poor. There are few to no cuts in the scenes, and they are incredibly sluggish and chunky. When two characters are speaking, medium shots are used, and close-up shots are used to show the characters' emotions and facial expressions. Throughout the entire show, the wording and pictures are fairly straightforward. Additionally, sound work was really straightforward. There wasn't much, if any, background music. Susan's portable radio also connects the period of production to the radio pop songs it plays. Additionally, the theme song has a sci-fi and alien-like quality. Mise-en-scene:When Susan initially appears, she is dancing and dressed like a teenager from the 1960s. Her hairstyle and attire are classic 1960s fashion. The scene is quiet dark and frightening as the two professors wander around the junkyard.
